Stories of the district
Gut Wachsdorf and the history of the settlement
Wachsdorf, a small, historically significant settlement south of the Elbe, is closely linked to the history of Gut Wachsdorf. The property gained particular importance when it became the property of Katharina von Bora, the wife of the reformer Martin Luther, in 1546. As an outstanding personality of the Reformation period, she used the estate primarily for livestock farming in order to ensure the economic stability and self-sufficiency of her family.
But this phase only lasted a short time, as Gut Wachsdorf fell victim to marauding mercenaries in November 1546 - a fate that affected many places during that troubled time. The destruction made it impossible for Katharina von Bora to manage the property long-term, and the loss placed a significant strain on her economic endeavors.
The Wachsdorf settlement itself remained an agricultural place over the centuries, whose residents were repeatedly confronted with challenges such as wars, natural disasters and economic upheavals. Despite these adversities, the village retained its historical identity.
Today, a memorial stone on the site of the former estate commemorates Katharina von Bora's short but important ownership. It symbolizes her legacy and the challenges she had to face. Another memorial stone along the road between Wittenberg and Wachsdorf honors Gottlieb Vehse, who died in a lightning strike in 1871, and thus refers to the history and people of the region.
Today Wachsdorf is a tranquil town with rural peace and historical significance. The surrounding fields and forests still bear witness to the town's agricultural tradition.
