Stories of the district

Today's Friedrichstadt emerged on the area of the former Mark Bruderannendorf. Historically, the district served as a refuge, especially in times of war. The old town center of Wittenberg, which was protected by walls, was evacuated when there was a threat of shelling or during armed conflict, so that the first settlement structures were formed here. It is conceivable that these emergency shelters represented the origin of permanent settlement in this area.

In the 1970s and 1980s the district was characterized by industrial housing construction. Numerous prefabricated buildings were built to meet the increasing need for living space. After reunification, however, there was a need for renovation and the demand for these apartments decreased due to changing housing needs. Between 2002 and 2008, large parts of the western residential blocks were dismantled. Since then, a new residential development with private homes has been developing on the open spaces created, while some of the remaining prefabricated buildings have been renovated in order to improve the quality of living and reduce vacancies.

Today Friedrichstadt consists of a mixture of renovated prefabricated buildings, new buildings and larger empty spaces that are in the process of change. Modern point houses were occasionally built, which contribute to the urban development improvement. An important social facility in the district is the senior citizen and care center, which plays a central role for the older population.
