Church

Apollensdorf is a historic village whose origins date back to the 13th century. The Romanesque village church, built around 1230, is an important architectural monument of this time. It impresses with its three-part structure, which consists of a nave, a recessed choir and an apse. Particularly striking are the meticulously layered field stones that characterize the building and give it a solid and rustic appearance. [1]

A striking feature of the church is the boarded roof tower, which is attached to the high west gable and thus stands out as a gable tower. In the south wall of the church there is a stepped arched portal and the arched priest's gate, both of which represent further historical elements of Romanesque architecture. [1]

The church's original windows were expanded in the late 17th century, except for the apse window, which remains in its original condition. The simple interior also dates from this period, including the octagonal baroque baptismal font with an inscription from 1667 and a brass baptismal font from 1669. [1]

The church and the site underwent several restorations in the 17th century and in 1970 and 1990-1994. An interesting historical anecdote is that Martin Luther often had conversations with the pastor here. Apollensdorf was first mentioned in 1361 as Boldenstorff. Until 1542, there was a cross-shaped Romanesque pilgrimage chapel on the nearby Apollensberg, the Marienkapelle, which can be viewed as a further witness to the religious history of the place. [1]

Stories of the district

In Apollensdorf mainly GDR housing is represented in traditional construction methods. This also applies to the “initiative buildings” of the chemical combine from the 1970s and 1980s, along the Ringstrasse at the western exit of the town. Consisting of 10 three-story buildings, the industrial housing construction is located close to the countryside. One of these buildings was converted into a daycare center, two were demolished and the remaining seven were renovated and are enjoying good demand, so that they are effectively fully rented.

Apollensdorf also has sporting and cultural activities to offer. Not only are there a lot of clubs based there, such as football, handball, chess, gymnastics and bowling clubs, the famous Apollensdorf Easter festival with Easter bonfires also takes place here every year.
